Caner Cindoruk

Caner Cindoruk is a Turkish actor. He acted in Ekşi Elmalar (Sour Apples, also: Şükrü), Hayat (Life), Yaprak Dökümü (Leaf Cast/The Fall of Leaves, also: Fahriye & Neslihan), Hanımın Çiftliği (Lady’s Farm), Muhteşem Yüzyıl: Kösem (Magnificent Century: Kösem, also: Doğaç & Ahsen), Zemheri (Love Storm), Kadın (Woman, also: Feyyaz, Seray, Özge & Bennu), Sadakatsiz (The Unfaithful). His upcoming film 7 Yüz (7 Faces), a co-production between Türkiye, Germany and the UK, will be released soon. Additionally, he recently appeared with Eda Ece in the Go Türkiye promotional series titled Hidden Lover.

Facts:

• on his mother’s side, he is of Yörük origin and on his father’s side, he is of Kurdish origin
  • describes Adana as a grotesque city where extremes exist side by side; very rich and very poor, very educated and very uneducated and where Kurds, Greeks and Yörüks live together, saying its multicultural nature benefited him
• actor Erdal Cindoruk (Gönül Dağı – An Anatolian Tale) is his uncle, his brothers Münir Can Cindoruk (Safir – Sapphire) and Taner Cindoruk (Ufak Tefek Cinayetler – Small Crimes) are also actors and author Zafer Doruk is his father
• his father, who was a writer, couldn’t earn money from writing for many years and tried to support the family through street vending, as one of three brothers, he began working alongside him at times to support him
  • they mostly sold slippers, and he also sold balloons, hair clips, and toys on his own, adding that selling things as a child required skill and helped him get to know the streets at an early age
  • while standing for hours at a street vendor’s stall, he constantly imagined becoming an actor, explaining that his inner voice never stopped and turned him into a dreamer who imagined many different lives, a habit he says he still has
• spent his childhood years backstage and always found a place on stage in the plays performed during his middle school, high school and university years
• he didn’t know what to expect the first time he stepped on stage, but was instantly captivated by its magic, adding that he has been doing theatre since the age of 17 without a break and always makes room for a play and rehearsals alongside his film and TV work, even staging productions in summer to perform during the season
• he wanted to study Language and History but couldn’t afford to study in another city, so he chose business instead, joined the university theatre club where he discovered experimental theatre, acted and directed plays and at 27 decided to leave Adana and move to Istanbul with three friends
• recalls that Yaşar Kemal visited the Hanımın Çiftliği set, praised their performances and told him that if İnce Memed were ever made after they were gone, he should play the role, adding that it was his greatest dream, though he now feels that he’s too old for that role

• says that if someone he’s in a relationship with falls in love with someone else and comes to tell him, it’s an honourable act, but hiding it and being dishonest means giving in only to one’s own desires
